How to take care of a pillow to keep it smelling fresh?

Pillow plays an important role in our daily life, but what you have to admit is that the pillow is dirty beyond our imagination! You will never believe just how much dirt, grime, bacteria, and dead bug a single pillow can accumulate. More time sleep with your head on a dirty pillow, more harmful to your health. Wondering how to clean a pillow to keep it smelling fresh? Here are our detailed guides.

 1. How to wash it

A. Checking the content and care/washing label to figure out what's inside.

  • If your pillow has a care label or washing label, read it and follow the directions. If it doesn't, or you clipped off the tag, use warm water and opt for the gentle cycle, then add on an extra cold water rinse and spin cycle. Tumble the pillows dry on low heat, fluffing and turning them often.
  • Unless your pillow is marked “dry clean only” you should wash most pillows about twice a year following care label instructions. Laundering a pillow isn't difficult, although it can take a little bit of time to get it dry.

B. Wash it gently

It's wrong to wash the pillow with one single method, follow these directions for specific types of pillow fills.

  • Down or feather

Wash with a small amount of mild powder detergent or a product designed to launder down, on warm and delicate. A liquid detergent that is not completely rinsed out will leave a sticky residue, and this causes clumping. So massage the pillow in the detergent solution if you can, to ensure that the down is thoroughly wet. Feather is another machine-friendly filler-just make sure there are no slits or tears in the pillow cover. For balance, load two pillows at a time and use only a small amount of detergent.

Unfortunately, you can't put these pillows in the washing machine, but if there's a removable cover, you can wash that according to the care instructions on the tag. To remove dust from a foam pillow, vacuum both sides with the upholstery tool. If possible, dial down the suction level to make the job a bit easier to do.

Another option: Tumble the pillow in the dryer on the no-heat or air-only cycle for 20 minutes. Spot clean any soiled areas with a cloth dipped in a mild sudsy soap solution. Rinse with a damp cloth. Allow the pillow to air dry completely before putting it back on the bed.

Wash with warm water on the gentle cycle, preferably a few at a time to balance the load. Be sparing with the detergent, use about 1 tablespoon of liquid soap.

  • Buckwheat hulls

Empty the buckwheat filling onto a large cookie sheet or wide, shallow bowl. Set the buckwheat out in the sun, which will eliminate odors, and wash the shell casing using cold water and a mild detergent.

C. Dry it thoroughly

It's crucial to get the pillow completely dry. Otherwise, you will risk mildew. Skip the auto-dry setting on your clothes dryer because the sensors will detect only surface moisture, leaving you with a pillow that's still damp on the inside.

If the weather is mild, hang most pillows on the clothesline until they're dried all the way through. Whichever drying technique you use, you still need to check for moisture inside the pillow. If none remains, it's time to make the bed.

For feathers, it's better to place them in the machine with several clean tennis balls, which will aid in the fluffing process. It's also a good idea to take them out periodically and fluff by hand, using your fingers to break up any clumps. Pillows will take longer to dry than a normal load of clothes. If they have a musty smell, set them in the sun for a couple of hours.

 2. How to keep pillows clean and fresh

The most obvious way to keep your pillow clean is to get bed clean.

  • Give your pillows a daily fluffing to restore their shape and remove dust. Then, every month or so, hang them outdoors on a clothesline for a few hours, ideally on a bright, breezy day.

  •  Don't track an entire day's worth of dust, dirt, and grime into bed with you.
  •  Take a shower or wash your face and don't lie down on your bed and pillow in your outside clothes. This will also soil the sheets and can cause skin irritation. You never know what you are bringing in from the outside!
  •  Use a pillow cover before the pillowcase for an added layer of protection. This will protect your pillow from stains, odors, and bodily fluids. A protective covering will also help prolong a pillow's lifespan and help keep its shape. When you make your bed in the mornings, make sure to cover it up with a duvet to minimize the dust accumulating.
  • Don't share a pillow with your pet. If you really want your dog or cat to sleep with you, have them sleep on the foot of the bed. You have no idea what could be hiding in your pet's fur.

 3. When to get a new one

Don't scrimp when it comes to replacing new pillows. But how do you know when it's time to toss? "If you fold the pillow in half, and it doesn't spring back into shape, plan for a shopping trip," says Forte, an expert in health care filed. To help pillows stay cleaner for longer, use liners under your pillowcases and wash them monthly.

A good pillow can make a world of difference in your quality of sleep. A good quality pillow will offer ample support to your joints and neck, while a pillow that has seen better days might give you a crick in the neck, a bad back, or poor posture. Your health and well-being demand it. You'll get a good night's sleep and peace of mind knowing you aren't hugging a dirty pillow to your face.
